Abu Dhabi abattoirs have been in overdrive this week, with more than 19,000 goats, cows and camels slaughtered to cater for Ramadan. City officials said more than 18,500 goats and sheep, as well as close to 800 cows and camels had been killed to ensure there was enough food for iftar and suhour. Authorities said they had also extended abattoir opening hours to allow buyers more time to purchase their meat. Fees for slaughtering animals in the capital have been fixed during the holy month. Goats cost Dh15, calves Dh40, and cows and camels Dh60. “We have raised the quality of slaughter houses to provide the best service for consumers,” said Abu Dhabi Municipality officials in a statement on Wednesday. “This was possible due to the thorough preparations carried out by the municipality ahead of Ramadan.”
