DIBBA // This year, about 100 health and safety breaches have been issued to barbers and beauty salons in Dibba.

According to Dibba Municipality, 81 men’s salons and 16 ladies’ beauty centres were fined. Most of the breaches related to non-compliance with hygiene standards, such as staff not properly sanitising equipment.

In Fujairah, before Eid Al Fitr, five men’s salons and four ladies’ beauty centres were fined.

“A team undertook the inspection of both gents’ and ladies’ salons before the beginning of Eid to insure the safety of the residents,” said Fatema Al Muqasah, head of the health and safety department.

“Some salons didn’t adhere to the health regulations. Breaches include the misuse of grooming tools, the lack of a proper uniform and the validity of devices and licences.”

Hairdressers in the area said sometimes, during busy periods, they did not have the time to sanitise their tools in the required manner.

“We don’t take appointments, therefore, there could be times where we take 10 clients at once and, due to the limitation of time, we will not be able to sanitise all the tools,” said 36-year-old Wedad Khalil, who works at a beauty centre in Dibba.

Bilal Ahmad, a Pakistani barber working at Al Malak gents’ salon in Fujairah, said he always makes sure he prepares his tools according to health and safety standards. “It is important to do so in order to keep the client happy and satisfied in order to come again and beat the competition,” said Mr Ahmad, 27.

Earlier this month, 12 penalty notices were handed out to hair and beauty salons in Abu Dhabi for breaches mainly related to the use of expired or counterfeit materials, uncleanliness or poorly maintained tools.

Abu Dhabi Municipality said that it was conducting training courses for beauty professionals to “secure the highest protection and ensure safety and health for all community members”.

Training is mandatory in order to obtain licences and permits for salons.
