DUBAI // The elderly, children under 12 and pregnant people should avoid the Haj this year, health experts advise.
The call came after 22 cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or Mers, were reported in Saudi Arabia last month.
Doctors have warned people who intend to perform the pilgrimage to have all of the necessary vaccinations before leaving.

Here are some precautions to take at Haj:
Before
• Pilgrims should visit a doctor at least a month before travelling for a health check and assess the risks the journey would pose
• They must take medication prescribed by the doctor. Those suffering from a chronic disease must take enough medication for two weeks with them
• Pilgrims must take the required vaccines 15 days before the journey to ensure the efficacy of the vaccines
• Innoculation against meningitis is mandatory and vaccines against influenza are recommended
During
• People are advised to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
• Avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
• It is advisable to wear a face mask in crowded areas
• Wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly before eating
After
• Ensure you get enough rest and drink plenty of water
• If you develop fever and cough severe enough to interfere with daily activities up to two weeks after your return from the Haj, seek medical attention
