ABU DHABI // Psychological support for cancer patients is one of the key goals of Rahma, a new service provided by the Cancer Patient Care Society in Abu Dhabi.
Academics and senior UAE officials were among those attending a launch event at Emirates Palace Hotel for Rahma, which involves an awareness campaign to educate the community about cancer and the importance of early diagnosis.
Group therapy sessions for cancer patients are also to be offered to help sufferers exchange experiences, which will help them deal with the psychological effects of diagnosis.
Society board chairman Dr Jamal Sanad Al Suwaidi said: "The establishment of Rahma represents part of the concerted efforts being made by the UAE, and the Abu Dhabi government in particular, to combat cancer and raise awareness.
"Rahma will also devise innovative support mechanisms that help alleviate the suffering that cancer patients, and indeed their families, go through as a result of having being diagnosed with the disease."
An interactive website is to be launched as part of an outreach programme for patients. It will provide a platform for further communication.
Volunteers and anyone wishing to donate to the cause can also access useful information on the site.
Testimonies of cancer patients describing how they have coped with the illness will also be posted on the website, to help inspire others who may have recently been diagnosed.
A free smartphone application will highlight the society’s key activities and objectives.
Experienced operators will monitor a free, confidential hotline offering advice to cancer patients 24/7, in both Arabic and English, to provide information on cancer and the specific treatment available.
The society is hosting a charity walk and cycle at Yas Marina Circuit on November 7 from 5.30pm to help collect donations and recruit volunteers. Tickets are priced at Dh50.
The website cancercare.ae is expected to be up and running soon.
