Maids arrested after death of newborn baby

SHARJAH // Two Asian maids have been arrested on suspicion of killing a newly born baby and trying to hide the body.

Police in Khor Fakkan were notified by hospital staff after a maid turned up seeking treatment. Doctors established she had given birth earlier and called police.

She told officers she had gone into labour and another maid helped her to give birth in the bathroom of their sponsors home’s in the early hours of the morning.

The maid gave conflicting statements about where they had put the baby and a search of the house and neighbouring garbage bins by officers and municipality workers discovered a baby’s body wrapped in a cloth.

After being examined by a police forensic expert, it was established the child had been killed after birth.

The maid told police she was unsure who the child’s father was. Police detained two Asian men among whom the maid had been in a relationship with to help with their investigations.

The case has been handed to the public prosecution.
