The UAE recorded 1,251 new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, after another 137,203 tests were carried out nationwide. Another 736 patients were cleared of the virus while one died as a result of complications. The figures raised the country's tallies to 167,753 diagnosed cases of the coronavirus, 154,185 recoveries and 570 deaths since the outbreak. More than 16.6 million Covid-19 tests have been conducted across the country since January, making the UAE one of the top nations for testing worldwide. The number of active cases currently stands at 12,998 - surpassing figures last seen in late June, when the country appeared to be recovering from its first wave. The UAE typically tests more than 100,000 people a day with teachers, taxi drivers, retail workers and emergency services personnel among the many who are screened every week or two to ensure they are clear of the virus. A negative Covid-19 test is also required to enter Abu Dhabi with those remaining in the emirate for up to eight days required to undergo a PCR test on day four and day eight. In response to the rising figures, officials have called on members of the public to act responsibly and abide by Covid-19 safety measures as the country enters a busy holiday season. Some public events will be held to mark such occasions – such as a National Day concert in Sharjah on December 3 with a permitted crowd of about 2,000 and a New Year's Eve show by Kiss in Dubai – but officials are urging people to ensure they keep safety in mind while celebrating. Other events, including the annual National Day parade and show in Abu Dhabi have either been suspended or will be held virtually instead.
