The UAE Embassy in Singapore has issued a safety notice to Emiratis after the city-state went on high alert over the growing coronavirus threat. Singapore’s Ministry of Health increased its response level to Code Orange after four locally transmitted cases were identified in people with no links to mainland China nor contact with those known to be infected. The number of people infected in Singapore is now at least 40. The heightened alert status means the outbreak is deemed to present a moderate to high risk to public health. It is only the second time Singapore has activated Code Orange status, the first being for swine flu (H1N1) in 2009. The ministry said it would introduce measures to “to minimise the risk of further transmission of the virus in the community” with a focus on “aggressively trying to stop or limit further spread”. The UAE Embassy in Singapore urged citizens to follow guidelines issued by officials. “The embassy calls on all citizens residing in Singapore to comply with the precautionary measures from the Singapore Ministry of Health after raising the degree of readiness to orange, in order to increase the incidence of infection with coronavirus,” read an embassy statement on Twitter. Citizens were urged to contact the embassy in case of an emergency. More than 37,000 coronavirus cases have been recorded across the globe, with the death toll soaring above 800.
