An Emirati woman convicted of aiding Al Qaeda has died in hospital, prosecution officials have said. Alia Abdul Noor was suffering from terminal breast cancer when she passed away on Saturday in Tawam Hospital in Abu Dhabi. She was arrested in 2015 and convicted in February 2017 of aiding the terror group with communications and promoting its ideology. Abdul Noor was also found to have set up social media accounts in multiple names for the dissemination of encrypted messages among members of Al Qaeda. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Ahmed Abdullah Al Hammadi, spokesperson for UAE Public Prosecution, said that Abdul Noor had refused treatment and "also went on hunger strikes on occasions". He said she received treatment for cancer in 2008 and survived the disease. "During her incarceration, her cancer relapsed. The prison authorities shifted her to the jail hospital, but she refused treatment," said Mr Al Hammadi, quoted by state news agency Wam. He said Abdul Noor was transferred to Mafraq Hospital in August 2017 and later Tawam hospital. He said her family and relatives were able to visit her. "Her condition gradually worsened as she was in the terminal stages of breast cancer and the last medical bulletin on her health concluded that her condition had deteriorated to a point of no return. She passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2019," Mr Al Hammadi said.
