Although the UAE has partially redeployed its troops from Yemen, it continues to provide aid to Yemeni families as the country holds hope of a return to peace. Emirates Red Crescent distributed 10 tonnes of food aid to the families of those who died in combat in the Shabwa governorate. These included 710 food baskets in the governorates of Assilan, Bihan and Ain. The beneficiaries thanked the UAE and Red Crescent for the support provided to ease their suffering, the state news agency Wam reported. More than 1,660 tonnes of food aid had been distributed since the start of the UAE's Year of Tolerance, including 28,220 food baskets for 127,789 people in Shabwa. The UAE provided $5.59 billion (Dh20.53bn) in aid to Yemen between April 2015 and June 2019, assisting 17.2 million Yemenis in every governorate of the country – including Houthi heartlands such as Saada. More than $550 million had been spent on aid operations in Hodeidah governorate, with most going to emergency food assistance. The UN has said that Yemen is the world’s worst humanitarian disaster, with millions on the brink of famine and deadly illnesses such as cholera resurgent.
