UAE diplomat backs Al Qubaisi for UN rights job

ABU DHABI // The UAE’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, has backed Mariam Saif Al Qubaisi’s nomination as a member of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for 2015 to 2018.

“Upon joining the CRPD, Mrs Al Qubaisi will work hard to promote the message of the CRPD, and to strengthen and empower the CRPD convention with a view to advancing the rights of people with disabilities and creating an inclusive society globally,” said Ms Nusseibeh at a UAE-hosted reception at the UN headquarters, according to state news agency Wam.

For almost a decade, Mrs Al Qubaisi has headed the special-needs sector at the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs – the central government authority and service provider for people with special needs in the country.

She also manages 25 centres for people with disabilities, develops and implements national strategic plans and ensures services meet international standards.

“She has contributed enormously to improved public awareness in the UAE on the rights of persons with disability,” said Ms Nusseibeh.
