ABU DHABI // Authorities are looking at ways to eradicate the use of dishonest weighing devices in the UAE.

Recently, the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) and the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy met to discuss ways to fight commercial fraud.

Abdullah Al Muaini, acting director general of ESMA, who attended the meeting, said there was a concerted effort to make sure all vendors used standardised scales.

He said inspectors would be monitoring commercial scales, as well as checking the weight of prepackaged products at grocery stores, butchers, jewellers, perfume shops and other outlets.
