DUBAI // Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is remembered for his philanthropic work, his role in advancing sports in the UAE and his skills as an accomplished equestrian and businessman.

Born in Dubai on November 12, 1981, Sheikh Rashid was educated in Dubai at the Rashid School for Boys, then attended Sandhurst Military Academy in the United Kingdom, from which he graduated in 2002.

He was raised by his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to value ethics and respect traditions, learning from him the skills of leadership and diligence.

Sheikh Rashid was an active member of Dubai Cares, a philanthropic organisation working towards increasing access to quality primary education for children around the world.

He was a founding member of the Dubai Sports and Cultural Club, for which he was chairman until 2005 when he stepped down for his brother, Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed.

Sheikh Rashid was a well-known figure in sports.

He took part in international and local equestrian endurance competitions, winning two gold medals in the 120-kilometre Endurance Individual Mixed and 120km Endurance Team Mixed events at the 2006 Doha Asian Olympics.

As the owner of Zabeel Racing International, he led the individual owners’ list an unprecedented five times with 428 wins.
