ABU DHABI // Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, ended his official visit to South Korea on Friday by holding talks with the prime minister, Jung Hong-won, in Seoul.
Mr Jung wished the President, Sheikh Khalifa, a speedy recovery from the stroke he suffered last month, adding: “The political stability enjoyed by the UAE is attributed to the wise policy of the late Sheikh Zayed and of Sheikh Khalifa.”
He said that Sheikh Mohammed’s visit represented a crucial addition to the already strong ties between the two countries.
Mr Jung praised the progress made by the UAE in various fields and said relations between the countries, which began in 1975, witnessed an important milestone in 2009 when the Emirates awarding its nuclear power plant construction contract to his nation.
He said South Korea was following the “creative economy” approach being used by Abu Dhabi in its Vision 2030 plan.
Sheikh Mohammed said: “Our visit to South Korea reflects the keenness of President Sheikh Khalifa and his directives to foster relations with your friendly country, and to work together to promote these relations for the interest of our peoples.”
He said he was satisfied with the progress on the UAE’s peaceful nuclear-power project with the Korean partners, and praised the support and attention given by the Korean government to Emirati students and trainees.
Sheikh Mohammed and Mr Jung also attended a ceremony during which several agreements between the nations were signed, including deals for extradition and mutual legal assistance.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and his South Korean peer, Kim Sung-hwan, signed the agreements, the state news agency Wam reported.

Your rights as an employee
The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.
The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.
If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.
Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.
The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.
