Sheikh Rashid was an accomplished equestrian, having participated in international and local competitions and winning laurels for the UAE.

 Born in Dubai on November 12, 1981, Sheikh Rashid was educated in Dubai at the Rashid School for Boys, then attended Sandhurst Military Academy in the United Kingdom, from which he graduated in 2002.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, paid tribute to Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed on social media on the fifth anniversary of his brother's death.

He posted a video montage to his Instagram story that included pictures of his brother throughout key moments of his life.

A recording of Sheikh Hamdan reading a poem written for his brother could be heard along with mournful music.

Sheikh Hamdan often honours his brother by sharing photos of them when they were young online. Last year, he posted a picture of himself and Sheikh Rashid the day after he and his two brothers married.

Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, eldest son of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, died aged 33 on Saturday September 19, 2015, of a heart attack. He was buried the same day in Bur Dubai's Umm Hurair cemetery, following funeral prayers at Zabeel Mosque at maghrib.

At the time, the Crown Prince of Dubai said “Today, I lost a best friend and a childhood companion, my dear brother Rashid. You will be missed.”

President Sheikh Khalifa declared three days of mourning across the country and flags were lowered to half mast.
