Ras Al Khaimah Police carried out 33 anti-drugs operations in the first quarter of this year, up 83 per cent on the same period last year.

Colonel Ibrahim Kaptan, head of the Anti-Narcotics Department, said it has a goal to fight the promotion of narcotics and psychotropic substances, with the support of Ministry of Interior.

As part of its regular inspections, police found that shops were selling drug-themed T-shirts and notified the authorities in the emirate to intervene, Col Kaptan said.

Maj Gen Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, chief of RAK Police, said the authorities were doing their best to prevent the youth from falling prey to addiction, according to Al Ittihad, The National's Arabic sister publication.

Maj Gen Al Nuaimi said the family played an important role in preventing drug abuse among younger people, and stressed it was important to report addicted children to authorities for rehabilitation and treatment.
