Mourners flock to funeral in Al Ain for military helicopter pilot

AL AIN // Crowds of mourners flocked to a mosque in Al Ain on Saturday night for the absentee funeral of a military helicopter pilot who perished at sea last week.

Lt Mohamed Nasser Al Dhaheri, 22, was on a routine flight with his colleague when their helicopter crashed over international waters on Sunday, according to state news agency Wam.

“He was born in Ramadan 1994 and it was his destiny to die in his birth month during those holy days,” said Butti Al Dhaheri, the pilot’s brother.

“Although we feel the pain of losing my dear brother, his martyrdom is a matter of pride and honour.”

He said that his brother died and “sacrificed his life for the sake of his beloved homeland, which all of his family will spare no effort in defending”.

Mohamed had four brothers and three sisters, with whom he always stayed in touch.

“We are receiving condolences and congratulations at the same time. This is a loss that’s enveloped with pride,” Butti said.

“We heard nothing but praise from everyone that knew him, from his friends and colleagues. He was an exemplary, devoted military man. He was also devoted to his family, siblings, parents and even his grandmother, with whom he shared a special connection.

“We were always in touch with him through WhatsApp. He spoke with us the day before but it was my mum who was the last to speak to him on the day of his death. We all are very proud of him.”

The absentee funeral prayers were held at Abdel Elah Al Ashhab Mosque, in Al Bateen, Al Ain.
