Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid described women as "the source of life", in a Mother's Day tribute.

The Vice President and Ruler of Dubai took to Twitter on Saturday to acknowledge the selfless love of mothers across the world.

Mother's Day is held on March 21 each year in the UAE, and Sheikh Mohammed shared his love and appreciation for mothers with his 10.5 million followers on Twitter.

He said there were no words to describe a mother’s love and mercy.

"To all mothers, you are the source of life, you are life. Our words fall short of describing the amount of love and mercy that you put in this universe. God bless you,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

For the special day, two frontline heroes told The National of the challenges they faced trying to care for Covid-19 patients, alongside their family responsibilities as mothers.

They said it was very difficult for them being away from their families at the peak of the pandemic, as they spent long hours at work.

Mother's Day is celebrated across the world on different days.

In the UK, mothers were this year honoured on Sunday, March 14, but in many countries the day is celebrated in May.

March 21 was set aside as the special day for mothers in the Middle East decades ago.

Egypt first declared March 21 as Mother's Day in 1956, and other nations in the Arab world soon followed suit.
