Ten prisoners are to have their combined debts of Dh1.95 million paid off by a charity so that they can be released.
The Al Manal Initiative, launched in 2013 by Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed, president of Dubai Women Establishment, will pay the debts, the state news agency Wam reported.
Sheikha Manal, wife of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, gave the order for the repayments, partly in celebration of her daughter’s first birthday.
Among those who will benefit are three prisoners who are being held in jail for failure to pay blood money after traffic accidents.
A committee from the fund will now begin assessing the cases of the beneficiaries in order to secure them a swift release and return to their families.
The Ministry of Interior will work with Al Manal Initiative, coordinating with creditors to close their files and allow for the release of the beneficiaries.
