ABU DHABI // More than Dh500 million was raised in six days to help rebuild war-torn Yemen.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region and chairman of the ERC, donated Dh300 million on Friday, bringing the total to Dh502.3 million.
Launched last Sunday under the directives of the UAE leadership, the appeal seeks to help nearly 10 million people suffering as a result of the Yemen crisis. The majority of the donatons were from generous members of the public.
These contributions to the Yemen: We Care campaign were boosted by spectacular donations from companies and some individuals.
On Friday, the Dubai Islamic Humanitarian Foundation donated Dh10 million and another Dh10 million was donated by the Dubai Islamic Bank. Meanwhile, the National Bank of Abu Dhabi and Emaar Properties each donated Dh5 million.
Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank donated Dh2 million, Etisalat donated Dh3 million, and Sultan bin Khalifa Humanitarian and Scientific Foundation donated Dh500,000.
Cash donations were collected at the Abu Dhabi TV News Centre, where they hosted well-known figures and officials from the Emirates Red Crescent.
Financial contributions were also made by SMS or through the purchase of coupons from ERC kiosks in shopping malls.
More than 15,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid have been sent to Yemen, including nine relief ships and land convoys through Saudi Arabia.
Yemeni president Abdrabu Mansur Hadi, in turn, thanked the UAE Government and people for the humanitarian initiative.
”I present my utmost thanks and gratitude to the UAE leadership and people for their sincere stand with the Yemeni people in this ordeal,” he said. “The people of the UAE and the sons of Zayed are no strangers to the Yemen: We Care campaign. Good springs forth from the land of good.”
The ERC’s efforts will also include the refurbishment of medical facilities – including five large hospitals and nine clinics – and 40 water wells in Aden, which serve 450,000 people, so that the population has clean drinking water.

Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away
It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.
The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.
But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.
At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.
The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.
After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.
Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.
And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.
At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.
And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.

Teachers' pay - what you need to know
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
