Database launched for disabled people in Abu Dhabi

A database of people with special needs has been launched in Abu Dhabi to develop services and programmes that will help the emirate become a more inclusive society.

The launch was announced earlier today by state news agency, Wam.

The Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination has launched the first phase of the database.

Data sources will be monitored and the design will be decided upon during this time.

In the second phase, the archive will be digitally linked to 13 entities in the emirate.

The third phase will focus on improving the quality of data by keeping it secure and will encourage data exchange between authorities.

The project is the first of its kind in the GCC and will have information and statistics on people with special needs.

It will also give local and federal authorities an estimate of the rate of disability in the country, which can help formulate and improve services.

Last year, an academic in the UAE, Professor Eman Gaad from The British University in Dubai, told The National the UAE faced significant challenges in changing attitudes towards disabled people.

He called for more action to ensure the community accepted those with disabilities on equal terms.

Last year, campaigners also called for improved access for disabled at UAE's airports, introducing quiet corners and sign language interpreters to help people with special needs.
