Expatriates are being urged to respect the UAE’s customs and laws during Christmas celebrations.

The British missions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have launched an awareness campaign calling on UK citizens to be aware of the rules, especially those on alcohol.

The 12 Days of Christmas initiative was launched on social media, including Facebook and Twitter.

“We want everybody to enjoy the holidays and to have a good time with their family and friends,” said Edward Hobart, the British consul general in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

“Part of enjoying Christmas and New Year is to stay away from trouble, and that can be easily done.

“All you need to do is to keep yourself informed about the laws in the UAE and to show courtesy to the traditions and culture of our host.”

Officials highlighted the need to be aware of laws related to buying and drinking alcohol, the UAE’s zero-tolerance for drink-driving and to avoid any behaviour that could be labelled as anti-social.

The embassy’s twitter account, @UKinUAE, started posting campaign messages on Thursday.

These included a warning about the risk of getting arrested for being under the influence of alcohol, how to apply for a liquor licence, and a reminder that the legal age for drinking is 21.
