Almost 50 houses in Sharjah have been remodelled to suit the needs of their residents, who have disabilities. The construction, which came at a cost of Dh3.5 million, was carried out by Sharjah Directorate of Public Works in co-operation with the Sharjah City For Humanitarian Services. "The work varied between the comprehensive maintenance of houses to the addition of lifts and partial maintenance,” said Mohamed Lootah from the Department of Building Maintenance. The work was spread across the emirate with 30 houses being remodelled in Sharjah, six in the central region, seven in Kalba, four in Khorfakkan and two in Dibba Al Hisn. Mr Lootah said they installed special, customised accessories in the homes as well as slopes for wheelchair-users, reported state news agency Wam. He said the projects were a reflection of the keenness of Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, to prioritise the maintenance and rehabilitation of basic facilities for people with disabilities.
