DUBAI // A message being circulated on BlackBerry and e-mail about a gang that uses a baby car seat to lure motorists into stopping is bogus, say Dubai Police.
According to the Arabic language chain letter, a gang operating in Al Khawaneej, Mirdif, Al Warqa and International City places a baby's car seat in the middle of the road, causing concerned motorists to stop. The driver is then robbed or raped by a gang. "Do not stop for any reason," warns the e-mail. "Instead, call 999 to report the incident."
Brigadier Khalil al Mansouri, the head of Dubai CID, says the information in the e-mail is completely unfounded. "We have not reported any such criminal activity in these areas," he said. "Some people just want to spread rumours."
The e-mail also warns residents not to stop if they are driving at night and have eggs thrown at the windscreen.
It goes on to advise drivers not to operate their windscreen wipers or spray water because the "eggs will mix with the water to block your vision", forcing the driver to stop.
According to myth-busting website, Snopes.com, this e-mail is a hoax that has been doing the rounds internationally since late 2009.
The rumours were first recorded in the US, where it was claimed criminal gangs where using bloody car seats to lure female motorists out of their vehicles as part of a "national gang week".
To date, according to Snopes, there has not been a single confirmed incident matching the description in the e-mail anywhere in the world.
