ABU DHABI // Members of the FNC are seeking to form a committee to look at cooperative societies.
Ali Al Nuaimi (Ajman) had asked the Minister of Social Affairs, Mariam Al Roumi, how her agency oversaw cooperative societies.
Mr Al Nuaimi said her written response was brief but the council accepted it, rather than call her to appear today.
He and other members said a request should be sent to the Cabinet to study the ministry’s policy, “due to the importance of cooperative societies and their role to serve the community”.
A temporary committee will study the 1976 law on co-ops and the role of the ministry in supervising and inspecting their work, including prices and their accounts, Mr Al Nuaimi said.
It will also look at how the ministry has been spreading awareness of co-ops’ work and supporting it.
Mr Al Nuaimi said the committee would start its work immediately after the summer break.
A final report would then be presented to the council for public debate with Ms Al Roumi.
“Final recommendations will then be passed to support cooperative societies, which will enable this sector to secure goods at affordable prices for low-income people,” Mr Al Nuaimi said.
