Firefighter in surgery after rescuing family

ABU DHABI // A firefighter's heart stopped beating after he saved a family whose boat had caught fire, then moved the craft to stop the blaze spreading.

The fire on Saturday began as the family was filling its boat with fuel at one of the stations at Al Mirfa Corniche in the Western Region. The blaze started to spread to the filling station.

But Sgt Abdulazeez Al Hammadi, an Emirati, took the boat's owner and his son, 6, to safety.

Sgt Al Hammadi then drove the burning boat away from the shore but suffered severe smoke inhalation, said Col Mohammed Al Nuaimi, the director of Civil Defence.

Emergency workers restarted the firefighter's heart with a defibrillator and he was flown to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, where surgeons installed a heart catheter.

He is in a stable condition, Col Al Nuaimi said.

The father, 36, and his son suffered second-degree burns and are being treated at Al Mirfa Hospital.
