Twenty people have been arrested on suspicion of posing as police officers to steal cars and lorries they told drivers had violated traffic rules.
The suspects, of Arab and Asian nationalities, are accused of stealing 14 lorries and four cars in Al Ain and smuggling them out of the country.
Police said yesterday those arrested were part of an international gang and received more than Dh900,000 to carry out the operation. The police did not say when the suspects had been arrested.
All the victims were of Asian nationalities.
They told police the suspects posed as officers and spoke to them in "confident" tones. The victims said they were told their cars had violated traffic rules and would be confiscated on the spot.
Brig Gen Hamad al Amimi, the head of Al Ain Police, said the accused took the vehicles to different areas of the country before smuggling them out.
He advised motorists not to hand over their vehicles to anyone claiming to be a police officer, saying cars were impounded according to "transparent and clear" procedures.
"The gang members stole the cars while wearing plain clothes and did not issue any tickets or use police patrol cars," he said.

Fourth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit
As he spoke, Mr Aboul Gheit repeatedly referred to the need to tackle issues affecting the welfare of people across the region both in terms of preventing conflict and in pushing development.
