DUBAI // A group of Indian expatriates will go on hunger strike with the social activist Anna Hazare in New Delhi today.
Seven Indian residents travelled home on Sunday to express their solidarity with the activist, hailed as a modern-day Gandhi, who has threatened an indefinite hunger strike to push for a stronger Jan Lokpal or anti-corruption bill.
Led by the Dubai-based lawyer K K Sarachandra Bose, the group will join scores of Indians to demand that the proposed bill includes scrutiny of the prime minister and the judiciary.
"We have joined the protest because of our feeling of frustration against growing corruption in India," said Mr Bose, who plans to not eat or drink water for four days.
"India is an emerging power and one of richest countries because of its minerals, yet more than 80 per cent of its people are starving," he said, blaming corruption for the growing disparity. He hoped more Indians from the Gulf would join their cause. The bill will be tabled in the monsoon session of parliament, which began on August 1.
