WATCH: The UAE lights up for President Xi Jinping’s visit

Buildings across Abu Dhabi and Dubai have lit up in red to welcome President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the UAE.

In Abu Dhabi, Adnoc’s Headquarters displayed a video on their building of the UAE leadership and the Chinese president.

Adnoc HQ is the second tallest building in Abu Dhabi. It boasts two LED facades that adorn the city’s skyline with colour at night.

In honour of Mr Xi’s visit, the building has been using its new north-facing media facade, which allows for image and video content to be played.

Boasting 28,380 LEDs split into 38 rows, it spans across 60 floors. .

The technology was designed to ensure the building is energy-efficient and vibrant. Whereas a conventional system would use about 430kW of energy, Adnoc’s system uses 30kW to power impressive displays.

However, it  cannot display at the flick of a switch and the building needs to be prepared to showcase media. At 6pm, the blinds on the windows come down on every single floor. Once they've closed, the LEDs come on, illuminating the building.

Inside, a team checks each floor to ensure no inside light will affect the facade. Another team sits in a control room that provides real-time information on the facade.

With four control racks for the two facades and a remote monitoring system, it informs the operator whether the LEDs are functioning in real-time.

A key feature to the north facade, is that the LEDs output has the same colour value for the red, green, blue and white. Typically, LED facades project 35% less output for red. However this system has an additional two red sub pixels to correct the difference, making sure President Xi’s visit is a memorable one.
