Ras Al Khaimah feels tremors from Iran earthquake

ABU DHABI // Ras Al Khaimah felt the effects of a 5.5-magnitude earthquake at 2pm today. The epicentre was 230km northeast of Ras Al Khaimah in southeast Iran, the UAE National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology reported. The tremor had “no effect” on the UAE and would not have been felt by most residents, the centre reported. The earthquake registered as a three on the Mercalli intensity scale, which measures the intensity of an earthquake in different locations.

On April 16, the UAE was hit by tremors from a 7.8-magnitude earthquake near the Iran-Pakistan border. Scientists and government officials reassured residents that the UAE is at no risk of a full force earthquake because there are no fault lines in the area. Unfounded rumours spread on social media networks that the UAE could be hit by a strong earthquake.
