The Ministry of Environment and Water has issued more than 2,000 permits allowing trade in rare animals and plants this year, mainly for caviar, skins and rare falcons, the ministry said. The UAE is a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which regulates trading of about 33,000 species of animals and plants. Trade in species threatened with extinction, such as cheetahs, peregrine and gyr falcons, is not allowed except for controlled exchanges serving scientific research. Travellers abroad are warned to refrain from purchasing rare animals, skins, fur or endangered plants unless they are sure there are no restrictions.
Returning with hard corals, sea turtle shells, reptile skins and parts, or skins of large cats such as tigers are certain to cause trouble, the ministry warns. vtodorova@thenational.ae
