DUBAI // Bentley has designed its first plug-in hybrid vehicle, a luxury car that is planned to be available in 2017.
The company announced its plans to introduce the technology “without comprise to luxury” on Monday and will showcase a model of the car at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition on Sunday.
Bentley Motors would be the first luxury brand with a plug-in hybrid vehicle, the company said. Wolfgang Schreiber, the company’s chairman and chief executive, said the electric power option would gradually be introduced to other models as well.
“By the end of the decade, at least 90 per cent of our production will be available as a plug-in hybrid,” Mr Schreiber said. “We are proud to be pioneering these developments in the luxury sector.”
The vehicle, based on the company’s Mulsanne luxury car, would have a 70 per cent reduction in carbon-dioxide emissions and a power increase of up to 25 per cent.
Bentley hybrids are to be capable of driving at least 50 kilometres on electric power only, the company said.
