Green growth workshops to be held

The UAE is pushing forward with its plan to create a green development strategy.

ABU DHABI // Interactive workshops are to be held that target vital sectors as part of the plan to develop a national green development strategy.

They will be run by the Ministry of Environment and Water, the Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Global Green Growth Institute.

The sectors include oil and gas, water and electricity, transportation, industry, construction, waste industry, and land use and agriculture.

Based on the outcome of the workshops, sector-specific policies to create change towards green growth will be developed, and these will define programmes, initiatives, and activities to achieve the transformation phase, said Aisha Abdulwali, the supervising officer in charge of implementing the Emirates Green Development Strategy.

The workshop topics include transformation into green growth by mapping out the vision for the sectors in 2021, 2030 and 2050, and the challenges that stand in the way.

Dr Thani Al Zuyudi, acting director of the energy and climate change department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the national strategy was designed to integrate existing policies and measures relating to the economic development plans. Experts and specialists will gather ideas and proposals in each sector, and these will be discussed at the Global Green Growth Institute.
