Dozens of abandoned boats seized in Sharjah as part of clean-up drive

Dozens of abandoned boats proving a blight on the environment in Sharjah were seized in the first nine months of the year as part of a major clean-up campaign.

The emirate's Environment and Protect Areas Authority towed away 39 vessels and issued warnings to owners to remove the boats within three months or face having them confiscated permanently.

Inspectors swooped on 17 abandoned boats in Kalba, 12 in Khor Fakkan and another 10 in Dibba Al Hisn during the crackdown.

The authority said dumped vessels are not only an eyesore in the emirate but can be hazardous to the environment as they attract stray animals and can be used as a shelter for wanted offenders and are a magnet for discarded waste.
