DUBAI// People planning to travel abroad are offered advice on how to save energy and water while they are away.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has launched a social media campaign called Tips Before Travelling that advises customers on how to cut energy use and help preserve the environment, reported government news agency Wam.

Its Twitter hashtag is #TravellingTips and advice includes switching off non-essential electrical appliances such as microwaves, oven and water coolers and heaters.

Residents can also save by making sure ice accumulated inside freezers is removed.

Other tips include inspecting bathrooms, kitchens and toilets to make sure there is no danger of leakage which could lead to higher bills and damage walls, floors and ceilings.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive of Dewa, said: “We work in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 which aims to reduce demand for energy by 30 per cent by 2030.”

Dewa has also launched programmes and initiatives to encourage communities to adopt more environmentally friendly behaviour, he said.

In the past six years, Dewa’s efforts have reduced consumption of electricity by 1,163 gigawatts, while 5.4 billion gallons of water worth Dh752 million have been saved and carbon emissions cut by 536,000 tonnes.
