DUBAI // A 23-year-old Emirati is in hospital with severe injuries after a knife fight, Dubai Police said.
The fight broke out at a house in Oud Al Matina 2 on Thursday night, reported Al Ittihad, the Arabic language sister paper of The National.
“There was a dispute between a young man and a group of other young men who were going around his house in their car while his sister was present,” said Dubai Police chief, Maj Gen Khamis Mattar Al Muzeina.
The sister, L A, from Comoros Islands, was standing in front of her house with her brother, A A, when two men, G G and M S, drove towards them. One of them is said to have looked at L A “suggestively” prompting her brother to yell at him.
An argument broke out between the men in the car and A A. They left the scene, but returned with a third man armed with daggers. They allegedly barged into A A’s house, where one of the gang, M S, was severely injured.
Maj Gen Al Muzeina said the UAE authorities do not allow anyone to take matters into their own hands.
“Today, in the UAE, there is no way that a person walking on the street gets attacked for no reason. This is something that is impossible,” he said.
“The UAE has institutions and it has laws. You cannot take matters into your own hands no matter what the circumstances are.
“There is justice, there are police. The authorities should have been contacted if someone is bothered by [a certain situation]. You can take the number of the car and call the operations room or closest police station.”
Maj Gen Al Muzeina added all those involved in the fight have been arrested. M S is being treated in Rashid Hospital.
“It is the right of every person, local or resident, to turn to the authorities in the UAE,” said Maj Gen Al Muzeina.
