ABU DHABI // The first day of Eid Al Fitr will be on Wednesday, UAE officials have said.
Sultan Al Badi, Minister of Justice and chairman of the moon-sighting committee, said that the crescent of Shawwal had not been sighted, so Tuesday will be the last day of Ramadan, according to Wam, the state news agency.
His announcement came after a meeting of the committee held at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department after maghrib prayers.
Mr Al Badi sent congratulations to the President, Sheikh Khalifa, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, as well as the people of the UAE and all Muslims.
The Sharjah Centre for Astronomy and Space Sciences had earlier predicted that Eid Al Fitr would start on Wednesday, saying that the Moon would not be sighted on Monday because it would set seven minutes before sunset.
