Volunteers help give school a facelift

DUBAI // Volunteers have given a school a facelift as part of a Dubai Cares project.

About 100 people took part in the renovation at the National Charity School in Al Garhoud on Saturday. The event was part of Dubai Cares’ Volunteer Emirates 2014 initiative and helped to bring the school’s academic resources up to date. “One of the points we focus on during the course of our work in beneficiary countries in the developing world is the creation of a conducive learning environment,” said Tariq Al Gurg, chief executive of Dubai Cares.

“Increasing access to education also involves developing a stress-free and resource-rich environment that stimulates students to think, learn and query.”

The event included residents as well as corporate volunteers who took part in activities that included the assembly of 1,000 school desks.

The school’s library was renovated with new educational resources, old blackboards were replaced with new whiteboards and a shade for the roof-top was added.

“The work that the volunteers have carried out today contributes significantly to the overall learning experience of the children enrolled here at the National Charity School in Dubai,” said Mr Al Gurg.

“It is a matter of great pride for us to be able to smarten up this school, while providing the residents of Dubai a window to the activities we undertake on their behalf, in developing countries around the globe.”

The refurbishment was sponsored by Al Tayer Group.

The National Charity School educates boys and girls from Grade 1 to Grade 12, aged five to 17 years, irrespective of their social or economic status.

The school follows the Ministry of Education curriculum with teaching in Arabic, English, mathematics and science.

This was the third Volunteer Emirates 2014 event of the year. The fourth and final event will take place on December 13.
