The Ministry of Education has issued warnings to a number of schools and one food vendor for serving prohibited and unhealthy food to children.
During spot inspections, an undisclosed number of schools were found to be serving crisps, chocolate and other prohibited items.
According to Al Ittihad, The National’s Arabic-language sister publication, the ministry issued written warnings to the institutions and said that if they continued to flout the rules legal action would be taken.
“The school health and food department is co-operating with parents to increase the variety of foods offered to children in school canteens, through questionnaires,” said Amal Al Koos, assistant undersecretary for school activities and environment at the Ministry of Education.
