New Emirati teachers assigned mentors in the capital

ABU DHABI // Emirati teaching graduates who join government schools in the capital will be mentored for a year to ensure they stay on track.

Those who meet the requirements, including an International English Language Testing System score of 6.5 and training in bilingual education, will be hired for a one-year probationary period.

During that time, the teachers will be mentored by the Abu Dhabi Education Council and paired with licensed teachers who will assist them in conducting lessons.

Dr Jim Mienczakowski, vice chancellor of the Emirates College for Advanced Education, said the probation could be extended to 18 months or two years depending on a teacher's performance and his or her need for further training.

"The college will also help the graduates if they need further help and will take students back in if they need additional language support," Dr Mienczakowski said.

He said all graduates will be given a chance to continue to hone their skills and further their career.
