A Muslim community spelling bee contest that has spread throughout America could soon be on its way to the UAE.
Indian-American Tausif Malik, an entrepreneur in Chicago, established the Muslim spelling bee there in 2011.
Mr Malik hoped a UAE version of the contest could start next year.
“All the participants are winners, as they all work hard and understand the value of education and competition,” he said.
At least 460 pupils from the US and Canada participated in the first contest in 2012.
Six hundred pupils competed last year in America’s largest community-based bee, and its second-largest generally.
The contest aims to connect Muslim communities through education and organisers want to take it to countries including the UAE, UK, South Africa, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
The top five spellers in the US competitions go on to the National Muslim Spelling Bee Finals.
The contest is open to children under 14. Winners last year received prizes including books and Galaxy and Lenovo tablets.
The Dubai Chamber of Commerce was part of a group that nominated the Muslim Spelling Bee last year for the Global Islamic Economy Award.
