ABU DHABI // The countdown is on for back-to-school, as public school teachers have less than two weeks left of their summer break before returning to class August 23.

Students get an extra week to soak up their vacation relaxation, as their first day of school isn’t until August 30, according to the 2015-2016 academic calendar released by the Abu Dhabi Education Council. Adec’s calendar follows the same dates as the Ministry of Education calendar released earlier this year. Both include 175 instructional days. Taking examination days and other non-academic related days into account, the academic year will include 183 school days.

The first term will end December 17. Teachers and staff will get a two-week winter break and have to be back in school January 3. Students get an extra week off and will return to class January 10.

The second term ends March 24 and the spring holidays start March 27, giving teachers and staff one week off and students two weeks off. Teachers and staff will return to work April 3 and students are back April 10.

The academic year will end June 23 for students and July 5 for teachers and staff.

Below is a summary of the Adec academic calendar for the next three years. The calendar applies to all public and private schools in the emirate. Private schools have to have prior permission from Adec to tweak their calendars.
