DUBAI // The manager of a travel agency was so angry at a customer for accruing fines by overstaying his visit visa that he held him captive against his will.
The criminal court gave the Pakistani manager, M E, 57, a six-month suspended jail sentence for locking up his compatriot, M T, who fell from a window while trying to escape.
The Dubai Criminal Court heard that M T had hired the company to issue him a visit permit to the UAE. After he arrived, he overstayed his visa and failed to return the calls of the company, which was fined because of his actions.
In September 2012, M E was informed that M T was residing in Al Aweer area. He contacted him and asked him to come to the travel agency office. When M T arrived, M E locked him in and left.
M T tried to escape from the office through the window but fell down to a first-floor balcony. He was found by the cleaner who had a spare key to the office.
“I opened the company’s door to start cleaning and noticed the window open, when I looked down I saw a man on the first floor bleeding,” said S A, a 26-year-old Pakistani. The cleaner called the manager and informed the police.
The manager confessed to detaining M T, saying he had been trying to contact him ever since the visa expired. “He did not renew the visa nor did he pay his fines for overstaying, then he disappeared,” said M E.

Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush
Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”
A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.
“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”

Financial considerations before buying a property
