DUBAI // An Emirati mechanical engineering student has won third prize at a competition in Barcelona for an invention that takes the hassle out of changing tyres.
Tariq Gharib Jume, in his second year at Dubai Men’s College, was competing against more than 200 students from around the world at the International Movement for Leisure Activities in Science and Technology competition.
Mr Gharib Jume, 20, and his friend Khalifa Al Nuaemi, from Khalifa University, created what they called a deconstructed overbalance wheel and automatic car lift machine.
It uses compressed air cylinders in a car’s air-conditioner to lift the side of the car without having to use a manual jack.
Mr Gharib Jume said the UAE’s harsh summers made it difficult for drivers when they need to change tyres. He said his project would help drivers to reduce the time and effort needed.
The invention was submitted through the Culture and Sciences Symposium in Dubai, which seeks scientific contributions for new inventions.
At the Barcelona science fair, the judging panel said the project was a great contribution to international car-design inventions.
Dr Saoud Al Mulla, director of Dubai Men’s College, said Mr Gharib Jume’s success affirmed the institution’s “learning by doing” principle.
“This shows that our students are able to apply science principles they have learnt in a practical setting, and they acquire the thinking skills and application simultaneously,” said Dr Al Mulla. “We are very proud that one of our outstanding students has won such a prize.”
