DUBAI // Dubai's population reached more than 2 million last year - with men making up more than three quarters of that number.
The data from Dubai Statistics Centre showed a figure of 1,536,380 men and 466,790 women, a total of 2,003,170. It showed that 76 per cent of the emirate's population are male.
The centre has attributed statistics showing 329 men for every 100 women to the large number of expatriate male workers who are not accompanied by their families.
The number of people in Dubai on a single day is more than 3 million, according to a bulletin on the centre's website.
The estimated total of 3,023,426 includes tourists and people who work in the emirate but live outside.
Investment opportunities were among the reasons for the daily influx, the centre said. Affordable accommodation in neighbouring emirates has led people who work in Dubai to set up home in areas near the emirate.
The numbers also reflect the tilt toward the younger generation, with the 20-39 age group making up two-thirds of the population.
Among the age groups, the highest number was 392,806 in the 30-34 group, closely followed by the 391,125 people in the 25-29 age group.
The smallest group was aged 70-74, with only 2,923.
The areas with the largest populations were Muhaisnah, Jebel Ali and Al Quoz industrial areas, and Karama. These four communities, with 442,109 people combined, comprised 22 per cent of the emirate's population. Several labour camps raised the population in these areas, according to the centre.
The population distribution data is vital to urban planners and Government authorities for drawing up programmes for each sector and community, the bulletin from the centre said.
The emirate's population officially crossed the 2 million mark for the first time on December 24 last year.
