Dubai duo ‘forged receipts and pocketed extra cash’

Prosecutors said the two men sold the vehicles owned by a driving institute where they worked to M A, 55, for Dh14,500, but submitted bills of sale for Dh9,500 per car.

DUBAI // Two men allegedly forged receipts from the sale of 36 used cars to make it look like they were each sold for Dh5,000 less before pocketing the difference, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Prosecutors said Egyptian M M, 42, and Palestinian A B, 35, sold the vehicles, owned by a driving institute where they worked, to Sudanese M A, 55, for Dh14,500. They then submitted bills of sale for Dh9,500 a car.

M A paid M M and A B Dh552,000, but the men forged receipts to say they received Dh342,000, netting them Dh210,000.

The scam was only discovered when M A, who paid in cash, demanded receipts for the sale and approached the company where M M and A B worked.

Management at the driving institute found emails between M M and M A about the sale and the request for receipts.

Emirati A J, a partner at the company, told prosecutors that the pair submitted receipts stating that the cars were sold for Dh9,500 each.

“I contacted the buyer M A and he told me that he paid Dh14,500 per car. M M went out of the country on vacation and didn’t come back,” A J said.

In court on Sunday, A B denied a charge of forgery and using forged documents. M M did not appear. The next hearing is May 15.
