Dubai accountant accused of stealing Dh2.5m from employer

DUBAI // An accountant has been accused of stealing Dh2.5 million from his employer that had been kept in the safe of a company salesman.

The theft was reported to Dubai Police on April 4 this year by the 24-year-old Afghan salesman, who works for a company that sells smartphones.

“I placed the cash, which belongs to the company I work for, in a safe in my apartment in Naif area,” the salesman said. “The next day, I found the safe unlocked and the cash gone.”

Police found a key used to unlock the safe and arrested a 34-year-old Pakistani accountant working for the company, along with two Afghans.

During questioning, the three confessed to stealing the cash, saying the accountant provided the key to the safe and salesman’s apartment, according to court records. It was not clear how the accountant got the keys.

Police found Dh1.3 million from the stolen amount in the apartment of the accountant and his Afghan accomplice. Another Dh500,000 was found in the third suspect’s possession.

However, in Dubai Criminal Court on Sunday morning, the accountant and one Afghan suspect denied charges of theft, while the third confessed.

The next hearing is on August 23.
