Drunken waiters jailed for knife attack in Dubai

Two drunken waiters who knifed a Good Samaritan who confronted them for harassing his friends have been handed jail terms.

The Filipino duo, aged 32 and 33, launched the vicious attack on the man in the corridor of a building in Al Muraqqabat, Dubai, with one stabbing him in the shoulder and the stomach.

The man, who was also kicked in the face several times, passed out after the brutal assault and found himself in hospital when he regained consciousness.

The incident took place about 4am on May 20.

Dubai Criminal Court heard that the victim, also from the Philippines, had spoken to the pair after pals he had invited to his home said they had been harassed by them.

“The two hit me then one left and returned a minute later with a knife and stabbed me," said the victim, whose age was not disclosed in court records.

"One of them then kicked me several times in the face and I fainted then woke up at hospital."

The man was rushed to hospital, where he underwent life-saving surgery.

A friend of the victim said he and his girlfriend had been verbally abused by the defendants, while he was also assaulted.

They went back to the victim's home to seek shelter, leading him to approach the pair.

Following the assault, the man and his girlfriend came to the aid of the unconscious man and called police.

Police arrested the two men the same day and, during questioning, found they were under the influence of alcohol.

“When we arrested them, one still had his bloodied clothes on,” said an Emirati policeman.

In court last October, the two men denied an attempted murder charge.

The 33-year-old defendant was sentenced to three months behind bars, to be followed by deportation, in addition to a Dh2,000 fine.

The 32-year-old co-defendant was sentenced to a year in prison, followed by deportation, and was fined Dh5,000.
