DUBAI // A labourer who attacked a woman in the street, punched her in the chest then sexually assaulted her has been jailed for two years.
The Indian construction worker, 22, was sentenced at Dubai Criminal Court on Monday for sexual and physical assault and consuming alcohol without a licence. He was also fined Dh1,000.
On January 31 last year the Filipino woman was walking home from a supermarket in Satwa at about 10.30pm when she saw the defendant approaching her.
“He grabbed me violently on the private parts, so I slapped him on the hand with the bag I was carrying, then he punched me in the chest and I fell to the ground,” said the victim, 26.
She ran away but a compatriot who saw her helped restrain the offender.
A policeman told the court: “When we arrested him he was completely drunk and said nothing except that he was sorry.”
The worker will be deported after serving his jail term.
