Drug suspect attacked police officer, Dubai court hears

DUBAI // A drug user lashed out at an officer after a police team burst into his home and woke him up.

The Emirati, 22, was in the bedroom of his Al Barsha home when he awoke to find officers surrounding him.

Dubai Criminal Court was told that he attacked and shouted insults at an Emirati officer, 28, during the incident on October 23, 2016.

Court records stated that police received a tip-off that the man was a drugs user, although the court record did not say which drugs were found.

The officer who was attacked testified: “When I woke him up and told him we were police and we had a warrant. He attacked me, then insulted me.”

Prosecutors said the man was eventually subdued.

Police found drugs in his room, while a medical report confirmed he had been using narcotics.

The defendant denied charges of assault and issuing insults.

“I don’t recall insulting or assaulting him,” said the defendant in court. He admitted using drugs.

A verdict is expected on March 13.
