Woman denies owing Abu Dhabi car rental company Dh40,000

Driver accused of renting out the car for two months and not paying the fees, hears court, but she claims to have returned it after four days and to have paid the fees.

ABU DHABI // A woman accused of owing a car rental company Dh40,000 told the Appeals Court today she had rented the vehicle for only four days.

The Egyptian R was accused by the company of renting out the car for two months and not paying the fees, but she claims to have returned it after four days and to have paid the fees.

Her lawyer Musalam Al Katheeri, said that when he went to the traffic department to check for violations registered on the car during the two month period he found evidence that the vehicle had been rented out to other people.

"We found two violations committed by two different people, other than [R], and the fines were issued with their presence," he said.

"How could I have been issued a face-to-face fine and give a different name than mine?" asked the woman.

Mr Al Katheeri said that the court needed to hear from the two people who were issued the fines before a verdict could be issued.

The Appeals Court agreed and adjourned the hearing until September 30. The verdict of the woman's original trial was not made clear.
